This platter is turned from bog oak – oak wood that has been preserved in wet soil for hundreds or thousands of years. The long time underground has naturally darkened the wood and given it deep dark brown hues.
The piece still bears clear traces of its original form. The exterior has only been gently worked, preserving the wood's raw edges and structure, while the soft indentation has been turned into the center.
The contrast between the raw and the refined evokes a sense of something both found and shaped. Like a preserved part of a tree that has been given a new function.
The surface is sanded and oiled, so the wood's structure and glow are clearly visible.
The platter is primarily a sculptural object, but can also be used for serving dry foods or small items such as jewelry or keys.
