This bowl is turned from bog oak – oak that has been preserved in wet soil for hundreds or thousands of years. The long time underground has naturally darkened the wood and given it deep black hues.
A crack running through the center of the bowl is stabilized with a butterfly inlay. The contrast between the dark bog oak and the lighter oak highlights the repair as a conscious aesthetic element.
The rim is rough and uneven, showing traces of its original form. The material's history and structure are clearly visible.
The surface is sanded and oiled, making the wood's structure and luster clearly visible.
The bowl is primarily a sculptural object, but can also be used for serving dry foods.
