The vase is turned from cherry wood and has been darkened through ammonia fuming, which brings out darker and deeper tones than untreated cherry.
It was turned from wet wood, which has since dried and shifted. As the shape has settled, small cracks have appeared in the surface, which have been filled with brass to highlight and gild the wood's natural imperfections.
The prominent crack was already present in the trunk before turning began. It originated from a natural internal fracture in the wood.
